Ran, Kogoro and I went to Lake Biwa to cheer on the Beika University team for the Birdman Rally!

After meeting up with Heiji and Kazuha, someone showed up looking for the team’s plane designer, so we decided to help. That’s when Heiji and I figured out that he had been kidnapped!

Things are heating up in this two parter case. Rare to see Heiji in a anime original episode an it was fun getting to know more about the Birdman Rally. Inventing man-powered planes to soar through the skies. But like Icarus, are they flying too close to the sun?

With the transmitter strapped to the plane and Heiji being out of commission for right now, they are definitely going to break the record. Too bad that no one noticed the guy but it does seem to be a long time since it happened. And yet, I find a few things that just don’t sit right with me.

First, no one seemed to have given the plane a thorough inspection prior to taking off. Surely the transmitter could’ve been found. Second, surely the members know who is working on the plane so shouldn’t some random guy be put in question. Then again, they could have volunteers that haven’t been introduced but that just seems unlikely. Lastly, Conan giving the sister the badge who gave it to Ishizumi as a good luck charm. Instead of running and screaming not to let the plane go off, he could’ve used the badge to talk to Ishizumi directly.

The motive is simple and yet I can’t find myself sympathizing with the guy. He could have taken this as a lesson to not do crime or something. But no. He doubles down and gets the people that got his brother arrested mixed up in his revenge scheme. The fact that he used to show off that he was affiliated with this robbery gang and was able to pull this off by himself baffles me.

On another note, the end card looks cool.

でもその人は隣の家の人で、奥さんが「隣の人が引っ越したのは、家が呪われてたせい」って言い出して体調が悪くなったり変な事を言うようになったから確かめようとしてたんだって!
ボクと小五郎のおじさんでさっそく調べはじめたんだけど…!?

On our way back home, Kogoro and I happened to pass by a neighborhood with an empty house.
And a man was lurking around that house.

The man turned out to be a neighbor. He was snooping around the house because his wife said the people moved because it was cursed. She’s even told him how she’s been feeling sick and saying other strange things, so he was just trying to see what was going on!

But as we looked into the situation we found a disturbing truth!

What an episode to come back to after a short break from new episodes.

We’ve got a concerned husband trying to figure out what’s going on with his wife. Turns out she’s been hiding that she may have killed a man 5 years ago in self defense but never reported it. Meanwhile the mother in law is gossiping with the other elderly ladies around the neighborhood. Perhaps now that the truth has been revealed she’ll go a little bit easier on her… right?

The dynamic between Kogoro and Conan was good and we got see Kogoro do some better deducing in this one .Unfortunately, he didn’t stick the landing so Conan had to finish the job as per usual. Kogoro’s movements were hilarious to watch when he got hit by the tranquilizer this time around.
Nonetheless, I liked the twists and turns in this episode. A well done anime original.

On another note, I thought she was trying to leave Beika City due to the crime rate and crazy stuff that happens.

Yet, lo and behold, the wife is caught up in a murder attempt herself. Maybe they should still reconsider moving?

Also, the new end card was cool. Really like the manga art by Aoyama. Would be nice to see this kind of consistency with the anime but oh well.

We got the birdman rally special coming up next. Thought it would be starting this weekend.

Kogoro and I ran into Takagi who caught a culprit that stole poison from Teitan University!
Turns out some of the poison was already used!
The criminal kept silent so it was up to us to find out who they were targeting.
But with only a picture of the suspect as a lead, how are we going to find them?!

An interesting premise with this case. Trying to track down a would be victim before the crime even starts is rare for this series. It was fun to see how they were able to track the guy’s target down. Too bad Ran wasn’t around to stop Kogoro but nothing a soccer ball can’t handle. Found it a bit funny that even the window had to get patched up. It was good to see Conan racing to save Kogoro. Makes me think that even though Kogoro doesn’t like Shinichi that much, Ran is in good hands when it comes down to it.

On another note, I wonder if Kogoro could feel that the cap had been already opened. But meh, clearly that wasn’t going to stop him from having some whiskey. The fact that he showed no hesitation gulping down the same brand of whiskey he got from Izumi really shows how carefree he can be. Never change Kogoro but it would help your daughter and future son-in-law if you were a bit more cautious.

No new episodes for a while. Looks like Japan will be getting a remastered episode for The Naniwa Serial Murder Case. After that, we have another collaboration.

ボク達が山道を登って行くと、石器人らしい人が! でも見失っちゃったんだ。
そしたら近くの崖下に男性の遺体を発見!
まさかあの石器人が犯人…!?

Ran, Kogoro and I went to investigate a rumor about a caveman showing up in the mountains!
There was a store close to the mountain trail selling caveman goods and having a photo competition which brought in a crowd of tourists.
We spotted the caveman while on the trail but lost sight of him.
In turn, we found a corpse of man at the bottom of a cliff!
Could the caveman be the culprit?!

Thought it was going to be another Urusawa classic but it turned out to be a relatively cohesive plot. A lot of potential suspects but it came falling apart when they started focusing on a few of the employees. Plus, the recording of that video was suspicious as well.

Love the bromance between those idiots, but this would have progressed a bit faster if they just said what was going on. But all’s well that ends well. The video pinned the right culprit.

On another note, nice to see them get rewarded with a bunch of snacks. Bit more interested in this episode just being a goofy one where Kogoro is looking for this guy. Curious on why he even left. Surely he knew that his family was going to go look for him, right?

But that’s a mystery that won’t be solved.

しかも試合終了と同時に爆破するみたいで…!?

Haibara, Ayumi, Mitsuhiko, Genta and I went to the opening J League game at the national stadium!
But while we were getting excited for the match, I caught a glance of Kogoro, who was body guarding a mayor with Inspector Megure and the police. What’s going on?

Turns out that a bomb has been planted somewhere in the stadium!
And its set to blow up at the end of the game!

A fitting episode for the world cup and before soccer gets started in Japan. It’s been a while since we saw Spirits and Big Osaka play.

It was clear from the beginning that Mayor Eguchi was acting suspicious. Bit confused on why Kogoro didn’t look her way when she said she dropped an eye contact. But we can just chock this up to Kogoro being Kogoro when he’s around a pretty lady.

Speaking of deliberate motives, surprised the bomb didn’t do more damage. Good thing he didn’t die from the explosion. If she really wanted to kill the guy, she should’ve had a stronger bomb. Or at least get the people who she was taking bribes from help her get rid of her secretary.

Overall, the episode was okay. I did like Haibara sulking because of Higo not being in the game but then she lights up as soon as she finds out he’ll be in the next one. She likes the player so much she has a mascot phone strap of the guy from time to time.

Speaking of mascots, the mayor in this anime original had one as well. It screwed her over in the end and gave her a sense of sentimentality. Unfortunately, she trampled all over it to make an escape at the end.

On another note, it never ceases to amaze that Conan kicking a bomb never blows up on impact. Usually see that kinda thing in the movies. I also liked the banter during the end card. Gotta love it when Shinichi just slips up.

Next Episode is…

It’s no Smile Village but I have a feeling that this next episode might be the work of Urusawa.

ボクも一緒に探したんだけど、お寺の石段の途中のベンチにいたおじいさんとおばあさんが手帳を拾ってくれてたみたい。

そしたら石段の上から声が聞こえてきて、男の人が一人転がり落ちてきたんだ!
さらに上の方から男の人が現れて、もう一人被害者がいるって言うんだけど…!?

Kogoro-ojisan got drunk last night and dropped his notebook somewhere.
We went looking for it and on the way to the temple’s stairs there was an elderly couple sitting at a bench who happened to find it.

But then, we heard someone yell up on the stairs, and a man came falling down! From up top of the stairs, another man told us another victim was there!

We got a new OP with some blast from the past shots here and there. I think it would’ve been cool to see something like Makka na Lip where they took shots from the manga. However, as this is the anime’s 30th anniversary it was nice to see redone shots of key parts in the anime. Speaking of key parts, I hope to see more canon episodes soon.

Now onto the episode. It was obvious from the start that he was the culprit. Or at least apart of it. They both had a connection in the mystery author. It’s a shame that Koiwai killed the guy that didn’t have anything to do with using his trick in the story. I can see that Okubo was just trying to protect Tsubota from getting caught up by lying. Then again, this could have been settled another way.

We haven’t got a ghost writer motive in a while. Wish it was executed better instead of it boiling down to how Tsubota killed the guy for not acknowledging they were partners. He pulled a stupid stunt and stole ideas from someone else. Okubo covered for him like a dad looking out for a son so I can see why he said that. Nonetheless, the guy’s pride took over and two people had to pay a grave price.

Nonetheless, the episode was okay. A bit disappointed that Kogoro couldn’t even see through this. I know he’s goofy but it would be great to see him solve a mystery or two every now and then. Unfortunately, I can’t even call this a mystery as it was clear as to what may have transpired up at that shrine.

With the World Cup almost over, I guess this is a good time than ever to put out this anime original next week. Haven’t seen one of these episodes in a while.

Azusa and I were running an errand for the Poirot cafe when we were followed by some suspicious people. We got into contact with everyone back at Poirot and had Amuro come meet us. But the last thing I remember was being across the street from the cafe when a bus pulled up in front of us.

When I came to, we found ourselves in a windowless room!
After Azusa found some unusual things, it seems we were held captive by a customer at Poirot who have ties to a bizarre case!

This was a nice light hearted case. I don’t know if any of the adults have ever had Conan explain his watch. Azusa is probably thinking what is with this kid. Then again, given all the crap he gets into, she can see why he needs something like that. Love the explanations by Conan. The match trick was cool but I’m wondering if they had opened the fridge would they have had more length to get the keys.

Found it interesting that so many buildings require a windows in Japan. Was confused on what an engawa（縁側・えんがわ） was so I did some digging. It’s basically that walkway in front of traditional Japanese houses.

On another note, holy cheeseballs. Kidnapping to stop a game leak is a bit over the top (;^ω^). Conan’s stare down was hilarious. I am curious about Azusa though. I don’t think we have any backstory on her. Then again, with so many people having a tie to the black organization or some authority, it is nice to have just a normal character. It would be kinda cool to see her find out who Amuro truly is.

Speaking of Amuro, was hoping to get the story progressed with him needing to be more observant of Conan due to his job with PubSec but oh well. Good to see Sera meet Furuya. Would have loved to see her interacting more with him.

Also, this might be the first time they announce in the end card that we won’t be getting a new episode until two weeks from now.

そのあとボクと梓さんで調味料の買い出しに行ったんだけど、怪しい人達につけられてる事に気付いたボク達は、ポアロにいる安室さんに迎えに来てってお願いしたんだ!
でも道路の向かい側にポアロがある場所でバスが来て…。

梓さんが目を覚ますと、ボクとどこかの部屋に閉じ込められていて…!?

I was at Poirot with Ran, Sonoko and Sera. As they talked about a bizarre murder case concluding in the culprit’s arrest, Azusa thought she saw that person’s face somewhere.

Afterwards, Azusa and I went to buy some seasoning but we noticed we were being tailed by a suspicious group of people, so we had Amuro come and meet us! But as we were going to cross the street, a bus came.

When Azusa came to, she found that we were trapped in a room!

Back with another canon episode. At first, I thought this was another anime original. We had an episode with Sonoko last week where she got caught up in an incident with Conan. Thought it was just Azusa turn as she doesn’t get that much screen time.

I think this might be the first time Sera has had a conversation with Rei. Kinda nice to see them interact and for Sera to have some suspicions here and there.

That was the quickest kidnapping I’ve ever seen in DetCo. It was like a magic trick. The old lady couldn’t be bothered to call the cops after what she saw and heard. Sounded like a kidnapping to me but alrighty then.

Sonoko didn’t make the brightest move. I get it is a stressful situation but perhaps don’t let the kidnappers know that the darn thing still works. They probably could have tracked them with the spare glasses at Agasa’s. Now that I think about it, the badges are perfect for the kids to have with them at all times given all the stuff they get into.

I’m guessing Azusa saw Keisuke’s screen somehow. Maybe a glass or the framed picture behind the customer gave her a good vantage point. Didn’t expect her to be into video games. Quite the coincidence someone working on a game guide or something is at Poirot.

Also, where the heck did they come from for Azusa not to notice that they were right next to her. It’d be interesting if there’s a trap door. Surely when Conan wakes up (if he’s actually been out since they’ve been there) they can find a way out.

Sonoko, Ran and I took a trip to stay at Sonoko’s villa!

Sonoko scared Ran with a scary story based on the Hannya that is rumored to be haunting the nearby forest. So, I went into the forest with Sonoko to gather some edible wild plants and to see if the rumor is true. That is when we were chased by the Hannya!

Great to see the Deduction Queen back in action. Had some great attention to detail and deductive reasoning with this episode. Plus, I like the dynamic between her and Conan. She really went all out to protect Conan.

Three suspects and they all had something interesting about them. I am kinda curious why Gonbei stop pointing his gun at the killer though. As soon as they all figured out who the killer was from process of elimination, you’d think it would good idea to keep the gun pointed at the guy with a freaking shotgun.

Love Ran showing up and kicking the guy. Her first ass kicking she belted out many years ago is something I was hoping for.

Overall, not too bad for an anime original episode. The scene between Sonoko going for the axe and then hearing the explanation from Gonbei was jarring. They even did that classic thing where they repeat a scene after what seems to be a commercial break. I found it a bit strange for Conan to take the suspenders and not his shoes. With how much crazy stuff happens on trips, you’d think he’d want to be prepared as much as possible.

Another thing that threw me off about this case is what did he do with girl’s ring? She had it on when he killed her. But after he buried her, it was gone. Conan deduced that she must’ve taken it off when meeting the culprit. On top of that, we didn’t even get to know the name of the victim.

Lastly, I liked the end card. Quite fitting as it is rainy season in Japan.

Looks like another canon episode is on the way. Surely this will give us a chance to see how Rei is paying even more attention to Conan.

警察の人に全員捕まえてもらったと思ったんだけど、なんだか歩美ちゃんには違和感があるみたいで…?

With the multiple robberies by a group of thieves going on, Ayumi gets an idea that if they show up, then she’ll meet Detective Precure.
So, the detective boys investigated the group’s next target: a jewelry store. We tailed one of their members and found out when they’ll rob the store and their hideout!
After the police captured the culprits, Ayumi still seems to have her doubts.
We will CUREtto the case closed!

The anime original detective collaboration mystery! “The Gold-Star Answer” coming up next!

Today’s Episode

Today’s episode is a special collaboration with Star Detective Precure! It’s another anime original but I had fun with this special. Kinda reminds me of the Jimmy Timmy Power Hour collabs back in the day. I didn’t know how it would work out. Their art-styles are different and wasn’t sure how they’d bring Precure to Detective Conan. However, after watching the special, it surprised me how good it was.

Our case starts out with Kaneko displaying a jewel in his store. Out of all places, this is the one store I would not want my jewels to be put on display. Even Conan points out this is the sixth time. The guy beefs up his security and even got robots. On top of that, he hires a guy built like a tank as his bodyguard… that ends up being the guy who is trying to rob him. The guy just can’t win.

When all hope was lost, Precure shows up… or at least the “we have Precure at home” Precure shows up. Ayumi’s expression was fantastic in this moment. The disrespect on the Precure Detective was abysmal and Ayumi was not having it. Even Haibara didn’t know what to make of the situation.

At first I thought that the real Precure was going to pop up, only for it to be Kaito Kid getting some payback. In a previous robbery this group disguised themselves as Kaito Kid. Considering what they did to Precure, I fear what get-up they tried passing off as the Great Phantom Thief himself. I found it adorable that he also did it for Ayumi. I am curious how he dealt with the height situation here though.

Overall, this was a fun episode. Nice collaboration, got a cameo appearance from the real Precure at the end, and Kaneko avoided getting robbed… this time. To top it all off Detective Conan did an episode with them, so I think I’ll be checking it out. And I like mystery shows, so maybe I’ll watch the rest of the show.

On another note, I found it a bit cute that Kuroba is in his room practicing these poses.

Next Episode is…

Sonoko is getting some screen time?! Will the Deduction Queen be making a comeback? I don’t know if this is a canon episode but I am all in favor of having using more characters..
