    ボクと蘭姉ちゃん、小五郎のおじさんでバードウォッチングに来たんだ! でもおじさんが双眼鏡であたりを見回してたら、道路の向こうの家から怪しい人が出て来たのを見つけたみたい。 ボクも見てみたら、電気屋さんの車で走って行っちゃったんだ! その家に行ってみたらリビングで胸を刺された男の人が! 電気屋さんの警察の捜査について行こうとしたら、玄関に倒れていた招き猫にも血痕があって…!?

    Ran, Kogoro and I went bird-watching together. But while Kogoro was looking around with his binoculars, he spotted someone suspicious leaving a house. I took a look and noticed it was an electrician’s truck driving away from the scene. And when I looked in the house, there was a man that was stabbed in the living room! The cops began an investigation into the electrician and we found a lucky cat by the entrance splattered with blood?!

    The case was good. We had several potential culprits and added some complexity in this one part episode. Really wonder who suggested to go bird-watching. Out of all of them, I’m putting my money on Ran. But of course, they end up discovering a dead body instead.

    Sucks to come home, find out your friend has been selling your guitars and then get killed by said friend. On top of that, the dude was impersonating him and dating women his friend’s name. That just doesn’t make any sense to go that far. Could understand a little if Shiro was an up and coming rock star, but even then he would have to resemble him to pull this off. Furthermore, how much money did Shiro have to go to America for 2 years and still pay for his place back in Japan? So many questions.

    I did find it strange for Shiro to go to the US, just to hone his guitar skills. Practicing and joining a band in Japan would have helped for sure. The more I think about it, I would have liked to know more about Shiro the guitarist. I’m also curious of how that conversation between Shiro and his impersonator Yumemura went before the murder.

    Not only did Yumemura impersonate then kill his “friend”, he pushed his girlfriend off of the second floor of a building. Like what the heck?! Good thing Ran knows basic life support. And with Conan’s trap set, they were able to find out Yumemura was the killer. It’s hilarious how they walk right into a set-up and try to play it off like they are innocent. All’s well that ends well.

    During the end credit scene, I found it funny that Conan is calling out Kogoro for impersonating someone. And to end the episode Ran gives him a little advice.

    Oh, Ran. If only if you knew… if only if you knew (;^ω^)

    大阪から来た平次兄ちゃん、和葉姉ちゃんと一緒に、ボクと蘭姉ちゃん、小五郎のおじさんで鷲尾山を登ってたら、途中で雨が降ってきたんだ!

    近くのお寺で雨宿りさせてもらってる間に、お坊さんに紅蓮髑髏っていう魔物の言い伝えを聞いたんだ。

    そしたら本当に人魂が出て、その先で行方をくらましてたお坊さんの遺体が…!
    そしたら小五郎のおじさんもいなくなってて…
    まさか紅蓮髑髏にさらわれちゃった!?

    While Heiji, Kazuha, Ran, Kogoro and I were heading up Mt. Washio, it started to rain.

    We ended up staying at a temple that was close by, where we heard the tale of the Crimson Skeleton from one of the monks.

    Afterwards, the ghostly flames from the tale led us to a corpse of the monk that disappeared!
    Then Kogoro vanished… Was he spirited away by the Crimson Skeleton?!

    It’s moments like this where you see how Ran feels about her dad. It was sad seeing Ran not knowing what to do. I did wish that Conan reassured her that Kogoro was fine and that they would find him for sure. Then again, solving the case and having Heiji have his time in the sun took priority this time. Besides when these two are stuck on a case, it’s hard for them to focus on anything else. In the end, solving the case faster will get Kogoro back, so I it’s fine.

    The trick was cool, so I tried it out of curiosity. The trick seems to work on the concept of paper lanterns where it rises into the sky. Used sticky notes at first but it didn’t work. Thought I needed to have a bigger size of paper for it to actually work, but that didn’t work out either 😓.

    Halloween is just around the corner, so this would have been nice trick for Halloween. Did find some people using newspaper and a different shape.

    On another note, Kogoro judo throwing the culprit was fantastic. Had to get him back for the cheap stun gun maneuver in the last episode. And to top off the episode we have these two…

    Alas, the Heiji x Kazuha train has no signs of leaving the station. Ran tried her best to put this together but reminding Heiji to confess to Kazuha would have made the chances of it actually happening go up. Ah, well matchmaker Ran isn’t giving up so there’s hope for these two… right?

    そしたらお坊さんから山に伝わる魔物・紅蓮髑髏の話を聞いたんだ。 そのあと小五郎のおじさんが突然 姿を消して、そこでボクたちが見たのは…!?

    We were climbing Mt. Washio with Heiji and Kazuha who came from Kyoto, Kogoro, Ran, and myself. Looks like Ran plans to take the two of them to see a romantic view.

    But on the way, we got caught in the rain and ended up staying at a temple. At the temple, there was a head priest and three monks, but something’s off…

    And then one of the monks began to tell the chilling tale of the Crimson Skeleton. Right after that, Kogoro went missing and we saw bursts of flames climbing the stairs!

    Ran’s playing matchmaker, Kogoro is tied up somewhere and someone killed a monk.

    Surprised that Ran hasn’t told Kazuha that she’s dating Shinichi until now.

    They have had many canon interactions with each other. How long has it been since the London case and the Kyoto case anyway… 2011 and 2019?!

    The rate things are going, Kazuha and Heiji are not getting together any time soon (;^ω^). How many times have we been in a situation where Heiji is trying to set up something to one-up Shinichi’s “Big Ben Confession” to Ran. These two are the next definition of “Just go out already” after Ran and Shinichi. Hopefully Kazuha’s wingwoman Ran can help.

    On another note, it’s a good thing that Momiji wasn’t tagging along. I do like that Ran thought climbing a mountain would stop her from being a third wheel. If she ended up getting tired, I’m sure Iori wouldn’t mind packing her up the trail. Thankfully, Karuta calls.

    Love that the monks all have iron（鉄・てつ・tetsu）/sage（哲・てつ・tetsu） in their names. Wonder if they have some other wordplay going on there.

    Speaking of names, rare for them not to have a character card for the victim.

    What about Kantetsu? He deserved better.

    Speaking of being forgetful of a character, even the monks went 5 whole days and didn’t think to report that Kantetsu has gone missing to the police. This week’s conan hint was bucket, so I’m guessing the bucket was placed there to hide the evidence of oil or something on the stairs.

    The killer seems to have used the same trick to kill that renowned statue researcher. Probably was killed because he noticed something was off about the statue. Considering all those statues where Kogoro was tied up, I’m guessing someone is making a quick buck on selling the shrine’s stuff. And that bucket getting knocked over… was it an accident or intentional? I think we have the culprit.

    It seems as though we have the culprit in our sights but more importantly… how will matchmaker Ran get these two together and who is going to save Kogoro?

    I do fear that 2026 (The 30th anniversary for the anime) isn’t going to have as many canon cases as we got this year. We seem to be in the back half of volume 105. Volume 106 released in 2024 while 107 released this year in April 😓.

    Detective Conan Episode 1177 – Find the Phantom Giant

    少年探偵団の3人が昨日、逃げちゃった猫探しを引き受けたんだって。でも猫の足あとが途中で消えちゃって見つからなかったみたいで、今日はボクと灰原も一緒に探す事になったんだ。

    そしたら取調べ中の重要参考人のアリバイ確認に来た高木刑事たちと会ったんだけど、高木刑事たちの言う作業着の大きな男の人は昨日、探偵団の3人は見てなかったみたいで…?

    Genta, Ayumi and Mitsuhiko were looking for a cat yesterday, but the trail went cold when the cat’s paw prints disappeared. So, Haibara and I decided to help out with the investigation.

    While looking for the cat, we ran into Takagi and Chiba who were checking a suspect’s alibi. Supposedly the suspect saw a tall man in work clothes yesterday, but Mitsuhiko and the others didn’t see anyone like that. What’s going on here?

    This was a fun little mystery. The Phantom Giant ending up being Mitsuhiko on Genta’s shoulders, finding the true culprit, the black mail that did Shiori in and even finding the cat at the end. Everything wrapped up nicely. Ironic how the cat is found after they stop looking for the little guy. He was even trolling his owner in one scene.

    I get people have different sides to them, but I’m surprised that Madoka didn’t know how greedy her sister was. Unfortunately, all that greed is what did her in. You would think that blackmailing someone is a bad idea given that if you push them too far, they’ll take any chance to get rid of the person causing it.

    Yumura could have brushed her deduction off with a “it was just a guess” instead of caving in. Nonetheless, pretty crappy thing to embezzle funds and even crappier to blackmail someone over it.

    Unfortunately for Yumura he’s not that bright. Conan yelling about the bag from a distance was a clear way to lure out the culprit. Then he tries to defend himself when they pin him as the true culprit…

    while he is breaking into Matoi’s apartment…

    with a similar bag to do a switcheroo and take down Matoi’s alibi…

    Okay, I believe you.

    On that note, I’ll leave this photo of how ridiculous his plan was to me.
    And I’m with Genta. Question marks… question marks everywhere.

    Finally learned what this trope is called.

  • Detective Conan Episode 1176 – The Hero of Ishinomaki

    宮城県石巻市に来たボクと、蘭姉ちゃん、小五郎のおじさん、灰原、歩美ちゃん、光彦、元太。
    実は『仮面ヤイバー』の撮影企画に歩美ちゃん達3人が当選したから、その前日に来てみんなで観光してたんだ!

    そこで偶然、千葉刑事の姿を見かけたんだけど声はかけなかったんだ。
    ところが翌日、撮影直前に歩美ちゃんの姿が消えてしまって…!?

    I went to Ishinomaki in the Miyagi Prefecture with Ran, Kogoro, Haibara, Ayumi, Mitsuhiko and Genta.
    Ayumi, Mitsuhiko and Genta won a chance to appear in a show with Kamen Yaiba, so we came the day before filming to sight see a bit!

    Then, we spotted Chiba by chance, but we didn’t call out to him.
    However, the next day, Ayumi went missing right before the shoot!

    Today’s Episode

    Today we are heading to Ishinomaki in the Miyagi prefecture. Another mystery tour-esque episode.

    This was a fun watch. Kinda cool that the kids got to be in something Kamen Yaiba related. Considering how many times Ayumi has gotten kidnapped you’d think that people would be like “nah Ayumi, I think someone should go with you”.

    The short scene between Haibara and Ayumi had me thinking. When Haibara and Conan go back to their old lives, the Detective Boys are going to be beside themselves. In fact, I think I got a sense of this when Shinichi was about to head to school for the first time in what seems to be forever in The Desperate Revival episodes. Shinichi ran into the Detective Boys and felt the distance. Really makes you wonder how the kids are going to take them leaving.

    So today’s case is circling around the idea of selling rare goods on the black market. There was even a murder case over the situation. I like how this can be centered around scalpers and their impact on people just wanting to enjoy their hobby. Luckily Chiba is on the case. Didn’t think he’d be into tokusatsu shows though.

    On another note, I’m not so sure why Ayumi is so adamant going to places on her own. Haibara had the right idea to go with her and then she gets kidnapped… again. Truly wonder how many times she’s been in this situation.

    I was curious if the QR code actually worked and it does. Couldn’t get a good shot of the other QR codes, so I’m uncertain if the others are able to pull up anything. I find this interesting for a digital stamp rally or getting people to know more about the town as they look around.

    The resolution was settled nicely. Curious how the belt works. Thought he had to hold the button down to have the ball inflate. Maybe there is a locking function.

    Found it a bit funny how the truck bounced back up.

    The culprit seemed obvious enough due to how the guy was late and appeared right after Ayumi and Chiba were taken. Kudos to the director and Yaiba doing their part to bring justice. True heroes of Ishinomaki!

    京都の港町で起きた殺人事件の調査依頼は、浦島太郎の呪いだってうわさされてるんだって。

    港で浦島太郎の歌が聞こえて、その方向か流れて来たボートには探してた友達の白髪になった遺体と、亀の甲羅、玉手箱が! さらに容疑者の一人だった女の人の遺体も!

    連続殺人を止められなかったボクたちの前に、警備艇に乗ってシマリスを連れた綾小路文麿警部が現れて…!?

    A murder case centered around a legend about Urashima Taro brought us to a port town in Kyoto.

    They could hear Urashima Taro’s song coming from the water. A boat drifted to the coast and it had their missing friend who now had a head full of snow white hair, a turtle shell on his back, and a jeweled box!

    But then one murder became two – a body of one of the female suspects was found!

    And just as we failed to stop the killer from taking another life, Inspector Ayanokoji appeared on a patrol boat with his chipmunk!

    Another sad case. It was an unexpected turn for it to be suicide. To go that far to prove that your brother was murdered. There had to be a better way. And the fact that she had her husband’s corpse in the wall reminds me of another anime original case a while back (The Detective Boys and the Traditional Dream House Case)😱.

    Surely they could have nailed her for the murder by taking down the wall but for the chocolate syrup to play a part in Nishino’s downfall was good. I do wonder why she didn’t notice it and cleaned it off. You’d think that she’d be smart to get rid of any traces of her killing Togashi given that she has been hiding her husbands body in the ryokan this whole time.

    I do like the escape attempt. Her tenacity is quite rare in this anime. Usually the culprit collapses to the ground with guilt but no, she doubles down and tries to escape. Even tries to take her own life in the process. Unfortunately (or fortunately?) for her, Conan was there to stop her. At first, I was wondering why he didn’t think to just use the soccer ball gadget like he has done several times in the movies and the anime itself. I did find it a bit funny that he tried to do something on his own at first. Kudos to Ayanokoji attempting to go in and save them though.

    The Conan hint was not helpful this time. I thought they’d bring up something about red tide or something about the bioluminescence to help solve the case but nope. If anything the chocolate syrup should’ve been the hint.

    The port town they visited this time is based off of a real town in Kyoto called Inechō (伊根町). So in a way that’s probably why these episodes felt like a mystery tour. We also got some interesting lore behind the Tale of Urashima Taro so that was nice.

    On another note, there was something in the end scene that had me curious.

    What is Yatsuhashi and why is it a traditional Kyoto souvenir? There seemed to be a few legends about it so I’ll briefly go into a one here.

    八つ橋 (literally eight bridges) is a rice cracker seasoned with cinnamon named after a koto (琴・こと) player Kengyo Yatsuhashi (八橋 検校・やつはし　けんぎょう). The snack does resemble the koto.

    Yatsuhashi seems to have caught on in Kyoto during the Edo period (江戸時代・えどじだい・Edo jidai) from 1600 to 1868 when Japanese confections ( 和菓子・わがし・wagashi) were rising in popularity. As more roads were made and travel became more prominent, Yatsuhashi became a staple souvenir for Kyoto due to its long shelf life and affordability. More people could travel far and wide sharing the delicious treat across Japan without it going bad on the road while also not putting a damper on their coin purse.

    Not sure if the raw yatsuhashi (生八つ橋・なまやつはし・nama yatsuhashi) could have survived back then but they look good as well. Plus, yatsuhashi come in many different flavors these days like matcha.

    大井弁護士が小五郎のおじさんに持ってきたのは、京都の港町で起きた殺人事件の調査みたい。

    行方不明になった友達を探してた人たちに突然、海のほうから浦島太郎の歌が聞こえて、聞こえてきた方向からボートが流れて来たんだって。その中には探してた友達の白髪になった遺体と、亀の甲羅、玉手箱が! 地元には浦島太郎の伝説があって、その呪いだっていうウワサが…!?

    Lawyer Oi requested Kogoro to look into a case at a port town in Kyoto.

    People were out looking for a missing friend when they suddenly heard Urashima Taro’s song coming from the sea as a boat drifted closer to them. And what they found inside, was their friend dead with snow white hair, a turtle shell on his back and a jeweled box! Urashima Taro is a local legend in this town and rumor has it that this was a curse!

    This two-parter case is feeling like a mystery tour episode. Plus a reference to Urashima Taro!

    Multiple suspects, a secret island, and old faces showing back up. Surprised to see Hiroki Oi and Ayanokoji show up in this. Haven’t seen Hiroki since “The Boiled Fugu Mystery Tour Showdown” and Ayanokoji since “Kaiju Gomera vs. Kamen Yaiba”. At least Conan won’t have to sneak around much considering these guys know who is the real detective. I mean darn Kogoro didn’t even notice they were being followed. Then again, I guess none of them caught on to the next person tailing them.

    It’s a shame what happened to Hitomi. Playing at detective can get you into some messy situations. Perhaps it would have been best for Kogoro to take her on so she wouldn’t go snooping around alone. That way he could keep an eye on her and she could get her vengeance that she wanted for her ex.

    I am curious about that island. It would be interesting to see if Takeshi was heading there to look for his brother. Maybe he thought that he was there and got amnesia or something. Or at least he wanted to see if his brother’s body was there. I do fear if he ended up going there, he probably found something he wasn’t supposed to and got snuffed out because of it. And that small box still being missing…?

    So Hitomi is dead, Nishino has an alibi, but what about the other suspects?

  • Detective Conan Episode 1173 – It’s a Ghost!

    Genta, Mitsuhiko and Ayumi went to someone’s house after hearing about a ghost appearance from a woman helping around the home. When they got to the roof, they saw a white silhouette with will-o-wisps floating around! On top of that, the home owner seemed to be concerned about prank calls… and so Haibara and I went to investigate as well! What is the truth behind the phantom?

    Today’s Episode

    Another low stake case for the Detective Boys to handle. Genta’s taste buds came in clutch this time. If food is involved, leave it to Genta to get the job done. I am a bit surprised he say anything about eel. The food must be that good to make him forget bringing up his favorite food. I wish that Ayumi asked about the cutlery earlier but considering the Motoko made a statement about not having any children Ayumi might have thought that the kid died in the past.

    Kudos for Motoko busting a scam that preys on the old people. The オレオレ詐欺 (Hey it’s me) scam will probably get worse in Japan and other countries with a lot of elderly. Reminded me of the bold old lady from The Dreamy-Eyed Woman’s Last Shot at Love episode. On a side note, if you are interested in a scam artist taking down other scammers, then I recommend checking out a television series called Kurosagi.

    For Tomoharu to take the newspaper statement literally is a bit silly though. This could have been cleared up if he just talked to his mom on the phone. 20 years sounds absurd but I guess it happens.

    On another note, Motoko’s hairstyle kind of reminded me of Granny Seiko’s from Dandadan. I wonder if this is what Seiko would look like in the Detective Conan universe.

    And speaking of character designs, this episode was on point with the characters. Sometimes Conan’s head just looks a little to jagged but it’s pretty good here.

    Next Episode is…

    Looks like we got another case related to Urashima Taro. Haven’t read it since elementary school and it’s one of the reasons why I got interested in Japanese culture. Also, whoever thought that parfait was a good idea has committed a crime.

    Momiji and her butler Iori happened to be on the same bullet train as Heiji and Kazuha by chance. However, when someone threatens Momiji and holds her hostage, Iori is forced to follow their demands. Heiji realized something was up and was able to get me secretly in touch with Iori. The criminal’s voice reminded Iori of the day he first met Momiji and led him to figure out who is behind this!

    Today’s Episode

    In retrospect, it is a good thing that Momiji bought up all those seats. If there were more passengers on this car, finding two guys pantsing the same dead dude would’ve been weird. Was curious about the pin sized hole in the guy’s pants in the last episode so I’m glad they finally addressed it. Plus, I got another rabbit hole to fall into with Japanese: Waseda Shorthand.

    Kinda wish that Iori could have let them know there could potentially be a third person on the train. Seemed a bit obvious at the time given she didn’t follow protocol and the fact there were 3 guys he took out back then. Then again, with Iori’s track record on the previous episode alone, I’m sure he has a lot of enemies wanting revenge. Unfortunately for them, he hasn’t lost his edge. I do wonder if they made the switch with the real vendor after they had Iori pick up the phone.

    And speaking of accomplices on a one way ticket back to jail, I guess after getting his face kicked in, the guy with the butt chin decided to get out of the game for good. Also why did they let ring leader of the trio get away back then? Surely they could’ve caught him.

    The old man talking to Furuya has to be head of pub sec or something. I don’t think he could be Karasuma but we’ll see. DetCo is known to have red herrings here and there, so I’ll keep being skeptical.

    On another note, Iori getting saved by a deck of cards reminded me of Carter getting saved by a wad of cash in Rush Hour.

    Hopefully we get the next canon case next month. Until then it’s back to the Detective Boys.

  • Detective Conan Episode 1171 – Why I Became Her Butler (Part One)

    大阪から東京へ向かう新幹線の中で、和葉姉ちゃん、平次兄ちゃん、紅葉姉ちゃんがトランプで七並べしてたんだって。 その前の席には執事の伊織さんも。 でも酔っ払った男に伊織さんは服を汚されちゃったから洗面台へ洗いに行くと、スマホが置いてあって着信が!

    電話の相手は伊織さんを知ってるみたいで、命令に従わないと仲間が紅葉姉ちゃんを襲うって言ってきたんだって! 命令の内容は…!?

    While they were on a bullet train bound for Tokyo from Osaka, Kazuha, Heiji and Momiji were playing sevens. Momiji’s butler, Iori, was sitting in front of them until a drunk guy spilled a drink on his clothes. But when Iori went to the bathroom to wash it off, he found a lost smartphone with a disturbing call!

    The caller seemed to know who Iori was and they gave him an order he couldn’t refuse otherwise Momiji would be in danger! What do they want him to do…?!

    Today’s Episode

    It has been a while but we are back. And it is another canon case. Was not expecting to get back story on Iori of all people. Kinda makes me wonder is there any average Joe in this series. They did mention he was in PubSec last year (Momiji Ooka’s Sweet Trap). Considering some suspicious characters were there when that scene occurred, I guess it will be revealed that he has ties to the Black Organization somehow as well.

    I did enjoy seeing the mental gymnastics Iori took to deceive Heiji but he saw right through it. I would have believed the story more if he wasn’t using cloths to avoid fingerprints. Plus, getting the suitcase open without the key is kind of suspicious as well. Sure his friend could have told him where they sitting on the bullet train but surely they wouldn’t leave the key as well.

    Speaking of surprises, Momiji doesn’t cease to amaze me. Iori pointed a gun at the girl and she didn’t even flinch. Plus, the bandages (which happen to be today’s Conan hint) are cute. Wouldn’t mind seeing a scene with Iori’s colleagues reacting to the bandages.

    The guy with the bandana sort of looks like the drunk that spilled the beer on Iori. Iori noticed the guy’s voice on the phone and it was quite obvious how they were trying to get Iori away from Momiji. I don’t know how they thought this would pan out in their favor. There just putting themselves back in the same situation from 3 years ago. Except it’s worse because Heiji and Kazuha are there and Iori is simply one hell of a butler.

    Looking forward to seeing the next episode. Supposedly this leads into another canon case so we might get back to back canon cases.
