Meitantei Bunshō's Reviews

Detective Conan fan putting a magnifying lens on the latest episodes while digging into the Japanese language and culture.

Welcome! MeitanteiBunshou here with some thoughts on today’s Detective Conan.

This Week in Detective Conan

But first, I’d like to talk about the movie that is coming in April.

Upper Left Side Text:
The Slumbering Memories (Case) Awakens

Text in Gold:
The “Sleeping Sleuth“ Kogoro and Nagano Police Inspector Kansuke Yamato-their fates bound by an avalanche from 10 months ago.

And now, the chilling “White Out Mystery” unfolds
amidst the icy, stormy mountains with a bang!

The visual looks so cool! This is going to be another exciting movie. Unfortunately, like the previous movie, I’ll probably have to wait a few years before it is released in America (´;ω;`)ウゥゥ.

Good thing is they have manga adaptations on Bookwalker for this that drop later on in the year. I don’t think anyone has officially translates them but learning Japanese has made this more available to me.

This Week’s Translation

Self-proclaimed “Great Detective Kogoro Mouri Enthusiast” and taxi driver Genki Ishikawa came to the detective agency. While being a chauffeur for a once in a 10-year event called the “Jewelry Washing Festival” at the Tsubaki Shrine, he witnessed two suspicious people sneaking photos of the attendees’ cars. Due to prior engagements, Kogoro-no-ojisan refused to take on the case. But when Ishikawa went back to investigate by himself something happened!

Today’s Episode

If you thought that this episode was weird, I wouldn’t blame you. As soon as I found out who wrote it, I wasn’t surprised.

The screenplay for this episode was done by the rather infamous Yoshio Urasawa. He is known for making surreal plots in the episodes he writes for. Luckily this one was on the tamer side. He has done other episodes such as:

The zaniness doesn’t stop with the plot. The visuals were over the top to match it. At some points it did not feel as if I was watching a Detective Conan episode. The animation was stellar in some parts like the chase scene. On the other hand, some things just seemed too fast pace and quirky.

The miko (shrine maiden) voiced by Kanae Itou was a great pick for this episode.

Another strange thing, people are spending 100,000 yen for each jewel to be washed. This must be quite the lucrative business for the shrine, but it seems like such a rip off. Then again, I don’t really understand the mindset of rich people.

On the bright side, I like to think of Urasawa’s episodes as somewhat of a cleanser. Usually, the next episode makes the previous one feel as if it was a fever dream.

Next Episode is…

As for the Conan Hint: Gold Foil – 金箔

Until next time 👋
