　When a hostess found a safe during reconstruction of the inn, she got an email about someone being after what is in it, so she hired Kogoro as a bodyguard. While Kogoro, Ran, antique specialists and I were keeping watch over the safe, the entrepreneur opened it to find old gold coins! Afterwards, he drove everyone out of the room to test the authenticity of the coins. But that night, the room he was in went up in flames!

This episode felt like a classic Detective Conan episode. They even had Kogoro conking out after food and drink and waking up when things start popping off. The trick also felt as if it came from Aoyama himself with how science based it was. Kind of missed this pattern in the anime lately.

Kadokura’s habit of checking his watch is what did him in when it came to stealing the coin. I’ll give him props for the calculated trick but the way he killed the guy seemed rather rash. Would have liked to see what went down. Surely, they were arguing about the coins or something of that nature.

The motive: another swindler situation. A bit understandable to have resentment against the guy who took everything from you, but I still would like to see someone stick to getting revenge another way.

After the punny end credit scene, it looks we are going back to remasters in Japan. It’s the “Just Like a 17 Years Old Crime Scene” Case so hopefully this is a refresher and a hint that we are getting more canon anime cases coming soon in June.

歩美ちゃんが絵日記の題材に困ってたら、偶然TVに犯罪ドキュメンタリー番組が放送されてたんだって。 それでドキュメンタリー映画を作れば、自由研究と絵日記の一石二鳥だって言うんだ。

取材対象はもちろん名探偵の小五郎のおじさん! 内容はもう解決した器物損壊事件だから危険じゃないと思ってたんだけど、撮影で事件について振り返っていくと、なんだか違和感が…!?

Ayumi was having trouble coming up with a topic for her illustrated diary. She happened to catch a crime documentary which gave her an idea – if she made one, she could get the picture diary and the independent study project done at the same time.

And Kogoro was just the person to go to for an interview! We talked about a solved vandalism case, so it didn’t seem like we’d be doing anything dangerous, but looking back at the footage and this case – what’s this bad feeling I’m getting?

Today’s Episode

I thought my hopes for Kogoro were being answered from the previous episode but, I knew that this was about Ayumi making another picture diary. Seeing “Kogoro’s Case Files” made me think it could be its own thing. Nonetheless, Ayumi is back again with her writer’s block and this time she’s getting a bit more ambitious – by making a documentary!

The true culprit’s methods were strange. She rents an apartment to hypnotize her neighbor so he would break into a jewelry store. But he goes around smashing things with a bat and spray-painting cameras. The hypnosis seemed to only make the guy paranoid, so I don’t why she thought this was a good idea.

I get that she wanted to avoid being in the cameras leading to the jewelry store, but did she ever think that there were most likely cameras inside the very place she was robbing. On top of that, she didn’t think that he might just move out due to the annoyance or make a complaint. Or better yet just unplug the planetarium. This IoT trick could be an interesting thing to use in another case though.

On another note, I did like the Detective Boys wearing other character’s clothes. Makes me wonder where Genta, Mitsuhiko and Sato will be when they are in their 20s. Wouldn’t mind seeing them running a detective agency with Shinichi and Shiho.

Inspector Megure was lurking around the detective agency’s office. He had suspicions that his subordinate was having an affair. Without any proof of the infidelity, he wanted Kogoro to get solid evidence. As soon as we began investigating, it seems he was meeting with a woman.

Today’s Episode

When I saw the preview for this episode last week, I was afraid that it was going to be Megure having a misunderstanding about Takagi cheating on Sato (^-^;

Turns out it is an epilogue of sorts from the new movie. This might be the first time they have actually done something like this. Still reading the novel, so Wani being killed off was a spoiler (´；ω；`)ｳｯ… Now I’m even more curious about what happens in this film.

As expected, it was a misunderstanding, and it was with good intentions. Thought the woman would be his sister or something. But that was cool of Sawatari to tie up loose ends for his coworker. It is sad to see Kogoro like that though.

Speaking of Kogoro, I hope he is getting his time to shine in the movie. I like his bumbling detective side but would love to see him handle some cases on his own. This episode alone was showing that he hasn’t had any work in a while. Heck, even Ran was helping him out by telling Megure about their price packages.

It was a good anime original episode. Murder mysteries are Detective Conan’s bread and butter but seeing cases like this every now and then is a breath of fresh air.

Never knew what these were used for. Thought they were only for aesthetics, but they are used to scare off animals (specifically dear). I do like how the title gives off a “When the Bell Tolls” vibe to it.

A tea ceremony master was killed in a hotel’s Japanese garden! Kogoro and I arrived on the scene, and we got info from Takagi and Chiba. That’s when we found out a photographer who came to take pictures of birds in the garden. The photographer also happened to have taken a photo of the murder at the exact time giving them the time of the crime. But what’s in that photo…?

It was interesting to see more suspects this time around. Even without Conan’s hint it was easy to follow. The way Takeru set up the camera was an interesting trick. The timing had to be perfect in order to get that shot. Wonder how calculated this was?

I wonder what would’ve happened if his plan got messed up due to a deer or something showing up🦌.

At first it felt as though the forest caretaker knew more than he let on. Also, curious as to why he didn’t them that video of Okawa arguing with his tea ceremony master in the first place? They were bound to get Morita involved in this as a suspect, so if he wanted to clear up suspicion (or place more suspicion on Okawa) it would have been a good idea to show them that video. On another note, if he wants that moss that bad, he can always ask the caretaker to get some for him. It seems like they are on good terms.

The motive was reasonable. Komada would have been better off as a host instead of tricking women at a tea house. I get that Detective Conan deals with a lot of murders, but I wouldn’t mind someone swindling the swindler once in a while instead going straight to murder.

Next Episode is…

Ah! It looks we are getting one – a tie-in to this year’s movie!

At least I hope from how the title seems to be a shout out to the movie title.
We haven’t seen Kogoro’s cool side in a bit so hopefully he can solve a case on his own soon. Perhaps even in the next episode as it seems Megure is asking the favor. Surely Conan would honor Kogoro’s pride as a detective right… right (^-^; 。。。?

This Week in Detective Conan

But first, I’d like to talk about One-eyed Flashback. It premiered on Friday in Japan but luckily, they made a novelization of it, so look forward to a review. For those learning Japanese, I find these books to be a good way to get in practice while also enjoying the story. Plus, it has furigana which comes handy when you want to look something up.

To brush up on the Nagano Trio’s cases, they have put out a novel and a manga that showcases these three. I’ll read this first since it has been a while.

The agency got a call from the First Investigation Division about Kogoro’s report being found at a scene of crime where a woman died from taking poison! The first person to discover the body seems to be her boyfriend who had plans to meet up with her. The case Kogoro took up was to investigate that very same boyfriend for cheating!

Today’s Episode

Feels strange not to have a tie in movie episode for One-eyed Flashback. I guess the one a few episodes back hinted at it but that’s about it.

Kogoro should be used to people trying to use him so I don’t know why he thought it would be a good idea to take this case up in the first place. Usually, the client comes to see him, so it is rare to see Kogoro take a case indirectly. When you take up an offer from someone who doesn’t come see you face to face or even talk on the phone seems a bit suspicious.

It is mind-blowing that Yusuke thought he had to go through all of this just to break things off with Aki. Would have been easier to break up with her instead of making this whole act and doing a “double suicide”. He pulled out all the stops, but the security camera made clear he is the one who made the call. In fact, I wonder if Aki’s place had any security cameras or any witnesses that saw him leave her apartment that night. The guy didn’t even seem to have an alibi.

For anime originals, this one was just okay.

This Week in Detective Conan

But first, I’d like to talk about … McDonalds?!

McDonald’s is back again this year with a few Detective Conan commercials to celebrate the new movie coming out soon. The sandwich looks good, so I’d like to try it one day.

Instead of Conan saying his usual phrase “There is only one truth” 真実はいつも一つ (Shinjitu wa itsumo hitotsu), he says 真実はいつもタツタ(Shinjitu wa itsumo tatsuta) or “The truth is always Tatsuta” (or maybe “There is only one Tatsuta”. It’s a nice play on words.

ホームセンターで知り合った人が夫婦で古民家をDIYで修理するっていうから、ボクと少年探偵団のみんなでお手伝いすることにしたんだ。 でも もろくなっていた壁が崩れて、その奥から白骨遺体が…! 買った古民家が実は事故物件だったことで夫婦はケンカになっちゃったから、ボクたちは2人のために調査を始めたんだけど…!? TVオリジナル 「探偵団と憧れの古民家」このあとすぐ!

After meeting a married couple at a hardware store, we helped them with a DIY project to repair an old Japanese style house. But when a brittle wall unexpectedly crumbled, it revealed a chilling discovery – a skeleton! They started arguing after realizing the house they bought was tied to a past incident. Determined to help, we set off to investigate on their behalf!

Was blown away by how this episode opened up. They broke a hollow wall down only to find a skeleton. Out of all the grade schoolers to find themselves caught up in something like this, it had to be the Detective Boys. These are the same kids that experienced a decapitation on roller coaster and many other horrifying events, so it was probably for the best. Really wonder why their parents let them hang out with Conan. Just another day in Beika City ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.

This was an interesting start to the episode, and I wish we could’ve got a motive for that murder case. I guessed that the money he was blowing left and right came from her life insurance policy, but it was just the money Akito buried ages ago. Unfortunately, this was just foreshadowing what was going to happen to this married couple. Luckily Akari met the Detective Boys.

It was bold of Akito to try to kill Akari after finding that skeleton in the wall. Would’ve been a good sign not to go through with it.

I am glad that the police were able to be somewhat competent in this episode. Chiba and Takagi spawning in to arrest the guy was funny. Plus, they were even able to beat the Detective Boys to arresting the other culprit which rarely happens.

Conan’s deductions were cool, and he even said his catchphrase.

The Detective Boys episodes can be a hit or miss but there is an aspect I like about it. Instead of putting Kogoro to sleep or tricking someone into thinking he’s just a normal kid, Conan can show off his deduction skills and trap the culprit more often. And speaking of the Detective Boys…

I’m going to miss the old ED T_T.
This new one… I’m probably not going to stick around for (;^ω^).

This Week in Detective Conan

But first, I’d like to talk about the second trailer for the movie One-eyed Flashback coming out next month.

We might be getting some background story on how Investigator Yamato got his eye taken out this time. Could have been its own case in a canon episode but it is great that they are giving more details on what happened.

Conan will have his time to shine but Kogoro and the Nagano Trio are going to play a key role in this movie.

While sightseeing with Ran, I was eavesdropping on the details of the case that Kogoro came to Kanazawa for. And that’s when I got kidnapped! Their true motive was to get the band back together. I decided to help them, but the brakes on the car were tampered with?!

Today’s Episode

Last week left off with one heck of a cliffhanger. Luckily Agasa’s suspender gadget came in handy. Reminded me of an elevator when they were getting pulled back up.

Clearly the guitarist was a red herring. Wasn’t sure who the culprit was going to be this time as there wasn’t much info to go off of in the last episode. At least any of the guys from the band could have posed as the guitarist back then. The handedness and how someone carries a guitar bag was interesting. Speaking of hands, they caught Domon… gold handed😎.

Considering these episodes are in the digital age, it wasn’t a good idea for Domon to go ransacking the place for the video anyway. Sure, this would have worked if we were in the 90s. Also, I’m surprised to see Kogoro has a smartphone before Ran.

Love how Spider-Man-esque Conan was with the suspenders in this episode. Didn’t know it could be launched that far. Since he didn’t have his turbo engine skateboard, this was the best alternative.

On another note, I think this might be the first time someone has ever pushed Sleeping Kogoro. I do recall The Antique Collector Murder Case where a guy almost split his wig open with a sword.

Looks like the last part of the episode was used to lead into the movie. Very subtle compared to previous years. I don’t think we’ll get a “this is what happened before the events in the movie” episode this year.

The next few weeks is going to be remasters of a case in Nagano. They’ll be covering the Furinkanzan Case to promote the movie coming next month. So, no new Detective Conan episodes for a while.
