Genta, Mitsuhiko and Ayumi went to someone’s house after hearing about a ghost appearance from a woman helping around the home. When they got to the roof, they saw a white silhouette with will-o-wisps floating around! On top of that, the home owner seemed to be concerned about prank calls… and so Haibara and I went to investigate as well! What is the truth behind the phantom?

Today’s Episode

Another low stake case for the Detective Boys to handle. Genta’s taste buds came in clutch this time. If food is involved, leave it to Genta to get the job done. I am a bit surprised he say anything about eel. The food must be that good to make him forget bringing up his favorite food. I wish that Ayumi asked about the cutlery earlier but considering the Motoko made a statement about not having any children Ayumi might have thought that the kid died in the past.

Kudos for Motoko busting a scam that preys on the old people. The オレオレ詐欺 (Hey it’s me) scam will probably get worse in Japan and other countries with a lot of elderly. Reminded me of the bold old lady from The Dreamy-Eyed Woman’s Last Shot at Love episode. On a side note, if you are interested in a scam artist taking down other scammers, then I recommend checking out a television series called Kurosagi.

For Tomoharu to take the newspaper statement literally is a bit silly though. This could have been cleared up if he just talked to his mom on the phone. 20 years sounds absurd but I guess it happens.

On another note, Motoko’s hairstyle kind of reminded me of Granny Seiko’s from Dandadan. I wonder if this is what Seiko would look like in the Detective Conan universe.

And speaking of character designs, this episode was on point with the characters. Sometimes Conan’s head just looks a little to jagged but it’s pretty good here.

Next Episode is…

Looks like we got another case related to Urashima Taro. Haven’t read it since elementary school and it’s one of the reasons why I got interested in Japanese culture. Also, whoever thought that parfait was a good idea has committed a crime.

Momiji and her butler Iori happened to be on the same bullet train as Heiji and Kazuha by chance. However, when someone threatens Momiji and holds her hostage, Iori is forced to follow their demands. Heiji realized something was up and was able to get me secretly in touch with Iori. The criminal’s voice reminded Iori of the day he first met Momiji and led him to figure out who is behind this!

Today’s Episode

In retrospect, it is a good thing that Momiji bought up all those seats. If there were more passengers on this car, finding two guys pantsing the same dead dude would’ve been weird. Was curious about the pin sized hole in the guy’s pants in the last episode so I’m glad they finally addressed it. Plus, I got another rabbit hole to fall into with Japanese: Waseda Shorthand.

Kinda wish that Iori could have let them know there could potentially be a third person on the train. Seemed a bit obvious at the time given she didn’t follow protocol and the fact there were 3 guys he took out back then. Then again, with Iori’s track record on the previous episode alone, I’m sure he has a lot of enemies wanting revenge. Unfortunately for them, he hasn’t lost his edge. I do wonder if they made the switch with the real vendor after they had Iori pick up the phone.

The old man talking to Furuya has to be head of pub sec or something. I don’t think he could be Karasuma but we’ll see. DetCo is known to have red herrings here and there, so I’ll keep being skeptical.

On another note, Iori getting saved by a deck of cards reminded me of Carter getting saved by a wad of cash in Rush Hour.

Hopefully we get the next canon case next month. Until then it’s back to the Detective Boys.

大阪から東京へ向かう新幹線の中で、和葉姉ちゃん、平次兄ちゃん、紅葉姉ちゃんがトランプで七並べしてたんだって。 その前の席には執事の伊織さんも。 でも酔っ払った男に伊織さんは服を汚されちゃったから洗面台へ洗いに行くと、スマホが置いてあって着信が!

電話の相手は伊織さんを知ってるみたいで、命令に従わないと仲間が紅葉姉ちゃんを襲うって言ってきたんだって! 命令の内容は…!?

While they were on a bullet train bound for Tokyo from Osaka, Kazuha, Heiji and Momiji were playing sevens. Momiji’s butler, Iori, was sitting in front of them until a drunk guy spilled a drink on his clothes. But when Iori went to the bathroom to wash it off, he found a lost smartphone with a disturbing call!

The caller seemed to know who Iori was and they gave him an order he couldn’t refuse otherwise Momiji would be in danger! What do they want him to do…?!

Today’s Episode

It has been a while but we are back. And it is another canon case. Was not expecting to get back story on Iori of all people. Kinda makes me wonder is there any average Joe in this series. They did mention he was in PubSec last year (Momiji Ooka’s Sweet Trap). Considering some suspicious characters were there when that scene occurred, I guess it will be revealed that he has ties to the Black Organization somehow as well.

I did enjoy seeing the mental gymnastics Iori took to deceive Heiji but he saw right through it. I would have believed the story more if he wasn’t using cloths to avoid fingerprints. Plus, getting the suitcase open without the key is kind of suspicious as well. Sure his friend could have told him where they sitting on the bullet train but surely they wouldn’t leave the key as well.

Speaking of surprises, Momiji doesn’t cease to amaze me. Iori pointed a gun at the girl and she didn’t even flinch. Plus, the bandages (which happen to be today’s Conan hint) are cute. Wouldn’t mind seeing a scene with Iori’s colleagues reacting to the bandages.

The guy with the bandana sort of looks like the drunk that spilled the beer on Iori. Iori noticed the guy’s voice on the phone and it was quite obvious how they were trying to get Iori away from Momiji. I don’t know how they thought this would pan out in their favor. There just putting themselves back in the same situation from 3 years ago. Except it’s worse because Heiji and Kazuha are there and Iori is simply one hell of a butler.

Looking forward to seeing the next episode. Supposedly this leads into another canon case so we might get back to back canon cases.

同じ学校のマリアちゃん、たくま君、団野君の3人に会ったんだ。

学校に行くと団野君が「人喰い教室」の話をしていて、花壇が真っ黒コゲになったこともあったって言うんだ。

そしたら教室の横の花壇が燃えてるのを発見して…!?…

It was the morning of Parent’s Day when we were off to school. We stopped to get some school supplies at the convenience store when we ran into our schoolmates Maria, Takuma, and Danno.

When we got to school, Danno started talking about “The Man-Eating Classroom” ghost story, and said that even a flowerbed got burnt to a crisp.

And then, the flowerbed outside our classroom caught on fire!

It feels as if it has been ages since we had a case involving Teitan Elementary School. Even mentioning Maria and Edogawa Fumio was a blast from the past. Now that I think about it, considering Conan is in elementary school you’d think he’d have more cases involved with his classmates but the opportunity doesn’t come often. Luckily, this canon case is here.

Conan bringing up the fact that he hasn’t grown even a millimeter since he took APTX 4869 is a bit concerning. Given the effects of the medicine, it probably doesn’t just revert you back to a younger age but keeps you at that exact state indefinitely. If that’s the case, Haibara and Conan are going to be in some trouble in a year or two due to them not aging at all. Kind of reminds me of that kid from Baccano that has to move from place to place so people don’t catch on that he’s basically immortal.

The case itself is a fun break away from the murder mysteries and I like how it will progress the story further. Maybe another reveal is on the way. The culprits all seem to have a motive but given that Kaisuke was doubling down on that ghost story and he is from a different class, it might be him. Plus, the potato chip at the crime scene, the 10 yen coin hint and Conan’s usual “word trap” is making him more suspicious.

うな重の平和を守るため、熱意あふれまくりの元太とボク達は、お店にいたお客さん達に話を聞きに行くことに…!

After we left school, we saw Genta who left before us running off somewhere. Turns out he was helping out the unagi restaurant owner who got hurt with a delivery.

But when we got back to the restaurant, there was a police car and onlookers out front! To protect the peace of the unaju, the overzealous Genta and the Detective Boys went on to investigate the people who visited the shop!

Love the new OP.

Have not caught up with the manga so I’m hoping that this opening is hinting at Ran getting back into the spotlight. The visuals are very cinematic. And speaking of visuals, this episode looked good. The characters seemed more proportionate.

Ladies and gentlemen… they’ve finally done it. We had Ayumi’s Picture Diary and Mitsuhiko’s Detective Notes. Now get ready for Genta’s Casebook of the Eel. Found Genta more tolerable in this one. He’s usually not seen as useful in the Detective Boys and goes on and on about unaju but it pays off in this episode. Really shows how perceptive Genta can be and really wish they’d use the Detective Boys in more effective ways.

I did like that Conan picked up on Okamoto’s Kansai-ben. Hanging out with Heiji must’ve helped a lot here. Finding out he still had the fan was cool, but Genta really should’ve kept the fan in the file to avoid messing up the fingerprints. Nonetheless, Okamoto got taken down by Genta’s body slam and was hauled off to the police station. Luckily, the owner of the shop wasn’t killed.

Next Episode is…

Bit shocked that the next episode is canon. Wasn’t expecting another canon case until August or September. Look like it is going to be a case at Teitain Elementary so perhaps there’s hope for the Detective Boys to be more effective in this case.

17年前の事件の時、殺害現場で黒田管理官はアマンダさんのボディガード・浅香って人を見つけたんだけど…!?

それでボクが現場にあった暗号を解いてたら、黒田管理官がその浅香って人そっくりだっていう若狭先生が先に帰っちゃったみたい。
しかも自分の傘を置いてったみたいで…!?

Commissioner Kuroda wanted me to solve a cold case at the chess tournament’s venue.

During the case from 17 years ago, Kuroda was at the crime scene when he found Amanda’s bodyguard who was… Wakasa?!

After I figured out the mystery from the photo, Ms. Wakasa -who Commissioner Kuroda says has an uncanny resemblance to the bodyguard – seemed to have gone home.

And she left her umbrella behind!

Today’s Episode

Good to see how all this occurred. And 10 years in a coma?! I guess that’s the reason why the memories are still so fresh in his mind. Kuroda seems like a sharp guy, so I find it strange for him to rely on Conan to figure this out. Or perhaps it was a test of Conan’s ability.

And holy cheeseballs! Wakasa is as scary as ever. Truly a cruel tactician. If Rum didn’t catch on Koboyashi would have been dead. She even robbed a gun store (wait… they have gun stores in Japan?! Oh, wait probably for hunting purposes or something. Thought it was like a hard ban on all guns, but I guess not.)

Love how Shuuichi ain’t even trying to hide his identity while chilling at the window in Shinichi’s house.

On another note, I’m surprised that Rum hasn’t used APTX 4869 already. I mean it seems like it would be easy to get a hold of due to them losing Shiho but surely, they have other ways of getting it, right?

Wonder how young he’ll become. More terrified that he’ll end up having that power back in both of his eyes if he gets a hold of it.

No preview for the next episode. Most likely will be some remastered case in Japan. Nothing but canon cases through June. Hopefully July has something in store for us.

When we went to go cheer on Shiratori at a chess tournament, a participant’s corpse was found!

I solved the case with the dying message and figured out how the murderer did the trick but, Commissioner Kuroda showed me a photo afterwards.

He asked me to mystery behind the deaths of Koji Haneda and Amanda Hughes.

And the person lurking in the shadows near the chess tournament’s venue – Rum!

Today’s Episode

So exciting to see what happened back then. At first, I thought he was going to shrink given the steam coming off of him. Considering this was 17 years ago perhaps the APTX 4869 wasn’t perfected just yet.

I get time is a weird thing in Detective Conan. It’s just strange to see them have smartphones in a flashback from 17 years ago. At least give them flip phones to fit the times. Given the iphone came out around 17 years ago, I guess it fits but oh well. Typical “when the heck are we” time happens a lot in Detective Conan.

Learning more about Rum and his abilities were interesting, too. Wonder how he lost that ability in his other eye and I guess were about to find out what happens to his left one. And the fact that these codenames can be passed down makes me wonder how long Karasuma has been alive. Or perhaps, that name has been passed down as well.

We went to go cheer on Shiratori at a chess tournament with Ms. Kobayashi and Ms. Wakasa. And his opponent was Commissioner Kuroda!

But before the match began, a murder occurred!

After hearing my deductions based on the dying message and everyone’s alibis, Commissioner Kuroda began recalling a case from 17 years ago – the unsolved case where Koji Haneda was murdered!

Interesting to see how that played out for the case. I’m mostly happy to see what went down with Rumi Wakasa and Kuroda all those years ago.

Love the Agasa’s science show and Conan trying to be secretive about Shinichi. He clearly can’t trust Rumi yet. Hopefully after Kuroda tells the tale, he’ll be able to make her an ally. And maybe then that will get Wakasa off of Haibara’s back.
